Local Recovery Program for Homeless Individuals Expands by 62.5 Percent
Welcome Home Ministries adds 15 beds, includes Permanent Supportive Housing…
Nashville, Tenn. (September 26, 2011) – Welcome Home Ministries, a faith-based long-term alcohol and drug recovery support program for homeless men, is holding an Open House on Oct. 9 to show the community its expanded programs, which has grown from 24 transitional and supportive housing beds to 39 total beds in 2011.
Welcome Home Ministries opened its first nine-bed facility in East Nashville in 1999. Founder and Executive Director Daryl Murray said the program grew to 24 beds by 2009.
“This year we added another permanent supportive house, which is open to graduates of an alcohol and drug recovery support program,” Murray said. “Recovery is a journey. True recovery looks at a person in a holistic way. In addition to the 12 steps, we use Biblical principles as a foundation to encourage individuals to look to God for healing and spiritual wholeness.”
Welcome Home Ministries specializes in outreach to chronically homeless individuals and offers a six-month transitional housing program with drug and alcohol recovery support as well as employment support and other vital services to help meet the needs of program participants.
“Part of recovery is self-sustainability,” Kyle Duvall, Organizational Advancement Director for Welcome Home Ministries, said. “Our program is not a handout; it’s a hand-up. Our compassionate care with the expectation of personal responsibility and accountability are keys to recovery.”
Duvall explains that Welcome Home Ministries takes an integrated approach to help guide the steps of recovery for program participants from spirituality and community to transportation and employment in addition to housing and health care related needs.
The new addition of 15 beds includes 9 transitional housing beds, and 6 beds for permanent supportive housing. Permanent supportive housing beds are available to graduates from a recovery support program in addition to Welcome Home Ministries’ six-month recovery program, as beds are available. The goal is to provide independent living with the support of Welcome Home Ministries’ faith-based recovery support program.
